How does a Solar Thermal System work?
Solar heating systems use solar panels, called collectors, fitted to your roof. These collect heat from the sun and use it to warm water which is stored in a hot water cylinder.
There are two types of solar water heating panels, they are evacualted tubes and flat plate collectors. Flat play collectors can be fixed on the roof tiles or integated into the roof for a more streamline appearance.
The benefits of Solar Water Heating
- Free hot water throughout the year.
- The system should provide an average of 70% of your annual domestic hot water.
- Reducing your carbon emissions and cutting your carbon footprint.
Is a Solar Water Heating suitable for my home?
You will need around 5 square metres of roof space which faces east to west through South and receives direct sunlight for the main part of the day.
Ensure that you have space for a larger or extra hot water cylinder. If you don't already have a dedicated solar cylinder installed you will need to add one.
Is your current boiler compatible with solar water heating? Most conventional boiler and hot water cylinder systems are compatible with solar water heating.
Do you need planning permission?
In England, most solar water heating systems dont need planning permission. However, if you live in a Listing Building or a building Conservation area or a World Heritage Site you will almost certainly need to consult with your planning department.
